Homegrown Healthcare: a place-based approach to rural health development

Western North Carolina has a persistent shortage of qualified health professionals as evidenced by the large number of Health Provider Shortage Area and higher rates of morbidity and mortality for preventable diseases. The strongest predictor of a health care provider practicing in a rural community is having been raised in a rural community. The Homegrown Healthcare program intends to address this through a comprehensive health professions pipeline program and unique educational opportunities.
