The Center for Rural Health Innovation

Image Placeholderis a 501 (c)(3) non-profit in Mitchell and Yancey Counties. The overall mission of the organization is to apply innovative technologies to improve access to health care in rural communities. Currently we have two projects under way: the MY Health-e-Schools school-based Telemedicine program; and the Homegrown Healthcare project focused on developing rural heath care providers from our region to help address the overall shortage of health care providers. Another focus of our work is supporting the development of school-based telemedicine programs through the Mid Atlantic Telehealth Resource Center.

UNC - Chapel Hill: Reducing HPV-Attributable Cancers through HPV Vaccination - an Interactive Technology-Based Approach for Adolescents in School Based Health Centers

The MY Health-e-Schools program is a member of the North Carolina Multisite Adolescent Research Consortium for Health, a UNC-Chapel Hill based program that Dr. North co-directs. This research group uses a network of school-based health centers and adolescent health practices to study effective methods for improving adolescent health and life-long health trajectories.

Currently MY Health-e-Schools is working with researchers from the UNC Schools of Medicine and Journalism to see if text messaging can be used to improve rates of adolescent vaccination in rural communities.
